The Kimono Series

The Kimono Series

Another thing you might not know about me is that I have an illustration degree. For reasons that I’m not going to get into here, I haven’t been able to draw for a few years but recently I’ve been slowly getting back into it. To be completely honest, I’ve been debating whether or not it would be a good idea to share my drawings online, because it might ruin all my progress. But then I threw caution to the wind and thus this post came to be

This is something I’ve been working on during my year in Japan, which is almost finished. I was blown away by all the patterns in kimonos and yukatas. The variety is endless! But what really inspired me was the colour combinations I found.

Japan has a great eye for colours and they end up with palettes we westerners would never dare to wear! And that’s why I started this series of drawings! I wanted to bring these patterns and colour combinations to the modern fashion world.

So I went on Pinterest, as one does, and pinned all the kimonos, yukatas and hakamas I could find and have slowly been transforming them into modern looks. Every Saturday I’ll share a look with you side by side with the piece that inspired it.

Without any further ado, here is the first sketch in the series that really started it all:

What do you think? Would you wear this look?

Let me know in the comments!
